Mayor slams new windmills scheme

Copeland’s mayor, Willis Metherell, has slammed new plans to build a wind farm in Pica.
“It’s just not on,” says Coun Metherell. “We do not want them here and they have no benefit to anyone”
The site at Fairfield Farm has been the subject of applications for more than 10 years and has always received strong opposition from villagers and councillors alike.
Bristol-based Wind Prospect Ltd re-submitted plans on September 29, after a similar application was withdrawn last year.
Coun Metherell, whose council ward includes Pica, said: “I’m of the same opinion as I was last time they applied. With the visual intrusion and the vibrations they cause, they’re of no benefit to us.
“The residents of Pica village don’t want them at all, people in Distington are against them and Moresby don’t want them either.”
Coun Metherell says she has campaigned against them before and will do it again.
The original plans – to erect six turbines – were withdrawn in 2005 after consultations with the emergency services raised concerns about their suitability.
The new application sees the number of turbines reduced to five and a reorganisation of their layout.
The plans will now go back to consultation with the emergency services and other relevant bodies.
Copeland’s planning panel is expected to consider the proposals late this year or early next.
