Planned wind farm near Pretty Prairie faces opposition

RENO COUNTY, Kan. At least for now, a group in Reno County is trying to stop an effort that would bring a wind farm near the town of Pretty Prairie.
The group is concerned about the economic impact of the proposed 220 megawatt facility and its proximity to area housing.
Those opposed to the wind farm also say they want more information about the facility and what it could mean for Reno County before plans move forward.
The group Tuesday asked Reno County commissioners to delay the project until more of its questions can be answered.
“We would ask that the moratorium not to put any turbines in Reno County during a six-to-12-month period, just to give us that time to vet out what we need and what we don’t to help us determine what protections are important to help us update our safety plan, and just really see how this would impact the community,” says Reno County resident Kristy Horsch.
Next Monday (Dec. 3) the Reno County Commission is scheduled to decide whether to delay or move forward with the wind farm.
NextEra Energy says it wants to start construction on the wind farm at the beginning of next year in hopes of completing the project by the end of 2019.
