Just say ‘no’ to big wind

Credit:  Pharos-Tribune | February 5, 2018 | www.pharostribune.com ~~

Miami County has a proud history. We have the Miami Indians, Francis Slocum, Peru Circus, Grissom AFB, industries, agriculture and people of all types. We have great schools and good communities.

We are in danger of being in the shadow of big wind. RES, a foreign-owned company, wants to build wind farms in our county. Turbines could be 400- to 600-feet tall. They are wanting to move into northern Miami County and even down as far as Grissom.

When wind farms are put into populated areas, property values can drop 11 to 60 percent, and school enrollment can drop up to 40 percent. Groundwater can be contaminated from the underground wiring and the metal and concrete base that’s put into the ground to support the turbine. Health problems like stress, headaches and hearing and vision problems have been reported. Animals also suffer, especially birds, including bald eagles. Pets, wildlife, livestock, bees and earthworms suffer from the air vibration, sound and electrical charges.

The whoosh and shadow flicker from the blades of the turbines are especially irritating to folks with health problems. Take a short trip to Elwood, roll down your windows, shut off your car and you will hear and see these things.

Big wind charges more for their electricity. If our electric companies are forced to purchase energy from big wind, our electric bills will be higher.

City of Peru: We need your help too.

If RES puts turbines close to Grissom, they will affect your lives too.

Please sign petitions to get the setbacks extended to 2,640 feet. Call our representatives and commissioners and tell them you don’t want your paradise destroyed by these turbines. Howard, Fulton, Grant and Wabash counties all said “no” to big wind. Ask our commissioners to say “no” to them as well.

If you have time, go into the zoning board meetings and the commissioners meetings. Let them know that Miami County does not want these turbines.
