Elk Lick turbine drops a blade

Broken turbine in Elk Lick Township
A wind turbine in the Ringer Hill Wind Farm in Elk Lick Township lost one of its blades Wednesday morning. No one was injured.
The 320-foot-tall turbine is one of 14 owned by New Jersey Resources Clean Energy Ventures on Mount Davis. It was completed less than a month ago, on Dec. 20.
Spokesman Mike Kinney said the turbine was operating until 12:08 a.m., which means the 177-foot-long blade fell off sometime after that.
“At this time we do not know the cause,” he said. “The manufacturer is en route to assess the cause as well as inspect the turbine.”
All 14 turbines have been shut down until the assessment is complete.
Kinney said he expects to hear more about the accident by Friday.
He said the blade fell right below the turbine onto property being leased for the wind farm.
“Once the assessment is complete, we’ll have a better expectation of the cost as well as see if it’s under warranty,” Kinney said.
Elk Lick Township secretary Ardith Deal said she had not heard about the accident or its cause Wednesday.
