Back up location chosen for wind turbine

Bluestem Energy Solutions is preparing a back up location for a wind turbine on the east side of Seward.

Matt Robinette of Bluestem gave an update of the wind turbine project during the Seward City Council’s Dec. 20 meeting.

He said U.S. Fish and Wildlife has concerns about the wetlands near the current turbine site that’s roughly 4 miles west of Seward and south of Highway 34.

While Bluestem is still investigating options for that site, Robinette said it has started development for a backup site three and a half miles east of Seward, south of Highway 34.

Robinette said Bluestem has a lease with a landowner on the east site and can begin dirt work there before the end of 2016. That way, Robinette said the project will qualify for tax credits.

“I guess we’re really developing two sites simultaneously,” Robinette said.

Robinette added that even though two sites are being developed, Seward will have only one wind turbine.
