Nantwich villages are joining a fight against a wind farm, claiming it would dominate the South Cheshire skyline.
Energy company Nuon Renewables is planning to erect seven wind turbines at Woore which would be as high as St Paul’s Cathedral.
Residents fear the plans could lead to health problems and noise pollution and also slash the value of their homes. A 60- metre met mast has already been erected just 600 metres away from one home at the Poplar Lane wind farm site.
A group called VORTEX – Veto On Rural Turbine Expansion – has been visiting rural Nantwich areas to persuade them to join the battle.
Member Steve Ellsmoor, of Dorrington Hall Farm at Woore, said: ‘I play cricket at Audlem and you can see the met mast from there. The thing we fear most is the noise from these huge things.
‘Because this land rises out off the Cheshire plain, it will be visible for miles around. An evaluator has said that our farm is unsaleable at the moment as a result of these proposals.’
Villagers in surrounding areas, including Audlem, Buerton and Bridgemere, are fearful of the impact the development will have on them.
Audlem Parish Council chairman Richard Furber said: ‘We don’t want it around here. It will be a blot on the landscape. We are right behind VORTEX on this.’
Buerton parish councillor Chris Warburton added: ‘I am very concerned. I am told I will be able to see this from my house and also hear it. Don’t these things belong in deserted coastal locations?’
The wind farm is expected to generate 32 million kWH of clean carbon-free electricity each year, meeting the energy needs of up to 6,800 households.
Nuon says up to 27,400 tonnes of CO2 will be saved compared to a conventional coal-fired power station. Spokesman Al Hanagan said an application will be submitted to North Shropshire District Council ‘in the autumn’.
He added: ‘The objector lobby VORTEX is promoting the idea that wind turbines cause noise and in particular infra-sound and amplitude modulation health problems. Recent governmentcommissioned research does not support this contention.’
