Derbyshire Dales: Wind farm application refused

Planning chiefs have refused an application to build a wind farm on land in the Derbyshire Dales amid fears it would have an adverse affect on the surrounding landscape.
The application for five wind turbines on land off Manystones Lane, Brassington, submitted by Griffe Grange Wind Farm Ltd was turned down by Derbyshire Dales District Council’s planning committee in a meeting last week.
An officer for the authority stated one of the reasons the application should be refused was because it ‘would be a visually dominant and pervasive addition to the countryside in this sensitive landscape, close to the Peak District National Park boundary.’
Friends of the Peak District, the National Trust and CPRE Derbyshire also raised concerns the turbines, which would have measured 100 metres with a capacity of 2.5MW each, would have affected the surrounding landscape.
Steven Radford, director of Griffe Grange Wind Farm Ltd, said: “We are disappointed by last week’s decision by Derbyshire Dales District Council.
“Derbyshire Dales has limited potential for onshore wind and we believe Griffe Grange is an appropriate location for a mid scale wind farm development in association with the seven adjacent consented turbines of Carsington, Ryder Point and Viaton.”
He said the project had strong community support and would have delivered £1.5million to local parishes over the lifetime of the project.
Mr Radford added: “We will now review the decision carefully and consider our options going forward.”
