Residents vow to fight wind farm appeal

Residents face a fresh battle following the announcement that Calderdale Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for a wind farm near Todmorden will be appealed.
Objectors to the wind farm rejoiced in October when planning chiefs refused the proposals on the grounds that the wind farm – near Gorpley Reservoir – would have “significant, adverse, landscape and visual effects” on the area.
The proposals recommended the erection of four wind turbines towering between 360-390 feet on Inchfield Moor. The towers themselves – managed by Kelda’s sister company Yorkshire Water – would dominate the skyline at 259 feet.
The announcement by the water giant is the latest in a long-running battle fought by beleaguered residents.
“I’m shocked and I can’t believe that they are appealing against the decision,” said Stephen Bottomley, whose property is opposite Inchfield Moor and closest to the proposed wind farm.
“I’m disgusted and we will fight them all the way.”
At a meeting of Calderdale Council’s planning committee in October, Mr Bottomley raised concerns that the towers would have a detrimental impact on the lives of Clough Foot residents.
He complained that he and others would suffer from noise and blade flicker, as well as a loss of visual amenity.
But Kelda say that the project will deliver significant “green energy benefits” and that consultation has resulted in the reduction of the number of turbines proposed on the site.
A spokesperson for the company said: “The proposed development would generate around 4% of Kelda’s total energy needs, equivalent to powering around 6,300 homes and is part of a wider commitment to sustainable resources.
“With rising energy prices, the turbines will significantly help to keep customer bills as low as possible.”
“The company is committed to working with its customers should the decision be overturned at appeal and will continue to communicate with them over the coming months.”
