At the monthly meeting of Roe Valley Chamber of Commerce on Monday night, members unanimously indicated that they are opposed to the building of a wind farm on Binevenagh Mountain.

Speaking after the meeting, which was held in Limavady Council Offices, Chamber President, David Brewster said:

“Members of the Chamber had attended recent presentation by the company proposing the development and a discussion took place to consider the benefits of the scheme to local economy.

“Whilst there were some positives, the overwhelming view was that the Wind Farm would jeopardise the tourism industry, which was by far the most important element of future economic growth.”

Members also discussed the impending amalgamation with Coleraine, Ballymoney and Moyle District Council.
President Brewster had recently attended a meeting with the presidents of the Moyle, Ballymoney and Causeway Chambers of Commerce. He said progress was being made with a view to forming a common strategy for the benefit of all businesses.

A meeting was being requested with the new council officials.

Further meetings were going to take place to try to co-ordinate those matters in which the various chambers could work for the common good.

The Chamber discussed its plans with regard to the rest of the year.

At Halloween there will be a free dance class for local children, who will subsequently perform in Market Street.

Chamber members will be participating fully in the Small Business Saturday national event which is taking place on Saturday December 6.

There will be entertainment throughout Limavady town centre for this initiative.

Tickets, priced £10, are still available for the Chamber’s Charity Breakfast on Saturday October 18 in the Drummond Hotel. The event will benefit the local charity “Hands That Talk”.

The Chamber intends to co-ordinate with Limavady Borough Council in the run up to Christmas.
The members did agree to target shoppers in Londonderry and Coleraine in the run up to Christmas to highlight the high quality shopping experience that can be found in the Roe Valley.

Finally, the Chamber had a very useful discussion with representatives of the Stendhal Festival and is excited by plans to develop a link with the very popular event. Discussions are at an early stage, but if they progress as hoped, the people of Limavady can be assured of some unique unusual promotions in 2015.

The Chamber was extremely impressed by the commitment of the Stendhal team to support local business.
