Consideration being given to wind turbine at Kemptown balefill

TRURO – Colchester County is considering erecting another wind turbine.

During a county council meeting in Truro on Thursday night, councillors heard a presentation by Endurance Wind Power, which is interested in erecting one 50 kilowatt turbine on the balefill property in Kemptown. The turbine was described “like a large piece of farm equipment” that could require a 25×25 square foundation base.

“The balefill would be the first recipient of the power but it would also be going into (the area’s) power grid,” said Michael Carey, sales manager for Endurance, adding the balefill site is ideal for a wind turbine because of the strong winds the area frequently has.

If the county agrees to the project, it would go through the Community Feed-In Tariff program (COMFIT), which is a feed-in tariff for local renewable electricity for community owned initiatives that are connected to a distribution grid. It could cost the county an estimated $541,000 for the turbine and related up-front costs.

Carey told council the turbine has a 30-year lifespan and the project would be a 20-year purchase agreement.

Council will refer the information to staff for further consideration. Public input will be sought as well.

Carey told the Truro Daily News if the project is given the go-ahead by council, it could be up and running “by spring, if we move fast.”

Carey added Endurance Wind Power has more than 600 turbines erected throughout the world, many of them in the United Kingdom and United States. They are also installing three in Riverton, Pictou County which will be operational soon.
