Turbines leave mess of roads

The Varna Wind Farm is up and running, and now there’s clean-up to be done.
The issue came before Bluewater Council in two ways at its Municipal meeting Monday.
Acting Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Grant tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the wind developer is on the hook for 1.6 million dollars in road repairs.
Public Works Manager Dave Kester submitted a report to Council noting extensive damage to Bronson Line and Goshen Lines.
Kester also noted patching will be required on Babylon Line.
The Acting CAO says there is no issue with the developer, Nextera, paying the cost of repairs as they have signed a road-user agreement with Bluewater.
Grant says the Public Works Manager and the municipal solicitor will make sure all of the compact’s language is in order before it is signed off.
Bruce Grant says Bluewater wants to get at the road repairs right away.
Kester told councillors Nextera had initially offered $800,000 for the repairs.
While road agreements are signed between the developer and the municipality, the cost of repairing drains is billed out to the ratepayers who have signed to have turbines on their farms.
Council also passed seven by-laws to pass those charges along to residents who have signed contracts with Nextera.
