Plan Commission to hear wind ordinance proposal from citizens’ group in July

A request from the Huntington County Concerned Citizens for amendments to the county’s wind energy ordinance was tabled Wednesday, June 11, at the group’s request, because some of its organizers were unable to attend the meeting of the Huntington County Plan Commission.

Miranda Snelling, of Huntington County Community Development, says the group’s request is unusual.
“Not very often does someone from the public request to amend an ordinance,” she said. “Usually that comes from the plan commission.”

The request asks for amendments to the county’s wind energy ordinance in anticipation of an application for a wind farm development from Apex Clean Energy.

The company is investigating the possibility of installing a $195 million, 2,000-acre wind turbine project in the southeast corner of Huntington County near Warren, but has not submitted an application.

There were about 30 people in attendance at the plan commission meeting. Despite the fact that the request item was tabled, citizens took about two hours during the public comment portion of the meeting to vent their concerns about having a wind farm in the county.

Huntington County Concerned Citizens plans to resubmit its request and make a presentation at the plan commission’s next meeting, set for Wednesday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the GAR Room of the Huntington County Courthouse.

After that request is formally submitted, commission members will decide whether to send it on to the Huntington County Commissioners with or without a recommendation, or they may amend the request and then send it to commissioners with a favorable recommendation.
