Windfarm protestors call for local action

Anti-windfarm campaigners are urging the public to protest against what they feel is a threat to the countryside. Keith Goodenough, chairman of GAWP, the Group Against Windfarm Proliferation, who lives at Davidstow, has called on people in the area to stand up and fight windfarm applications.
He explained: “In addition to the ongoing attempt (for the third time) to build wind turbines at Otterham there are two new proposals for another 24 giant machines in the same area. One is for four at Hendraburnick, about a mile south of Tetras Station alongside the A39, and another is for 20 on Davidstow Moor.
“These sites, all on some of the highest ground in Cornwall, coupled with the ones already operating at Delabole and Cold Northcott, would create a total of up to 60 turbines, many of them over 400 feet high, within a radius of only four miles from Davidstow Moor.
“This gross proliferation would desecrate the landscape, creating an unacceptable cumulative visual impact over a very wide area.
“This wind turbine alley would degrade the Heritage Coast and areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It would ruin the outstanding views from and to Roughtor. It would also threaten the health of children at local schools, endanger local and transient bird life, affect road safety and make tourists hurry through the area rather than stay and contribute towards the local revenue.”
Mr Goodenough is urging those against wind turbines to protest to North Cornwall District Council’s planning department at Barn Lane over the Otterham windfarm application which GAWP says it anticipates will come before planners later this year. The Otterham farm application number is 2006/01274.
GAWP believes that to add even one additional site, let alone the possibility of three would be unfair and unreasonable.
Alan Goodenough, spokesman for GAWP, said: “If all these come to pass it will be an absolute forest of wind turbines locally and everything we have said will come to pass and tourist numbers will fall.”
