Guy Vander Vliet from Johnson Controls, Inc. presented Mt. View School Board members with results of a preliminary wind feasibility study for installing windmills on district property, at the Monday, June 23, meeting.
“A wind turbine installed here is marginally feasible,” Vander Vliet said. “It’s right on the edge of being feasible.”
Vander Vliet explained that wind power is measured on a scale from one to seven, and the power at Mountain View is between a two and a three.
“If there was any less wind power here, we may have come back to you and said that a turbine is not your best bet,” Vander Vliet said. “But we think it is feasible, and would be more than willing to go ahead with it.”
Vander Vliet also offered other solutions for the district, such as installing occupancy sensors on lights, a computer system to control power usage and caulking and weather stripping to minimize costs of energy use.
If the district were to install a wind turbine, the base cost of the project would be $2,892,000.
Vander Vliet said that during one year of production, the wind turbine could generate $114,524 in energy, and $3,786,000 over 20 years.
“At this point it’s the board’s decision to decide if it’s something they’d like to move forward with,” Vander Vliet said. “At which point, you would have to put out bids for the project.”
The board held no vote on the future of the project at Monday’s meeting.
