Wind turbine plan for city parks

A council wants to build wind turbines on several parks in Leicestershire as part of a plan to cut carbon emissions.

Leicester City Council wants to get at least 20% of its energy from local renewable sources by 2025.

Possible sites for the turbines, which could be up to 450ft (137m) high, include Castle Hill Park, Beaumont Park and Humberstone Heights golf course.

The council said residents would be consulted and plans would only go ahead if people were in favour.

‘Exciting prospect’

City councillor Robert Wann said: “What we want to do is go out and consult on the principle of the idea of having wind turbines within the city.

“We have to look at all measures in terms of producing energy and keeping our CO2 emissions down.

“In real terms, I think there would be a lot of support for this. I think it’s a very exciting prospect.”

He said residents would be asked for their opinions on the subject over the next few months.
