Stand tall against ill wind in Peru

I have grave concerns for our town of Peru, where I have resided since 1989. I chose my home because of my love of the outdoors, and there is a lot of that up here. We residents are lucky people.
My concern is the proposed wind energy development on Garnet Hill. This is a large- scale industrial project that will negatively affect a number of residents in this beautiful town. There is a rising tide of issues involving wind development in Massachusetts, particularly in the town of Falmouth, where the developer is from. Information can be found on the town’s website.
Currently in the House is bill number H.2048, which would establish a commission to study the health impact from wind turbines. After the special town meeting vote to change our current bylaw, which the developer requested, he stated that he would walk away if the townspeople did not want the change. The vote was “no.”
A number of us put together a petition calling for a moratorium on wind energy projects for two years. The purpose is to enable townspeople to make sound decisions based on well-supported, independent, documented, current studies on health and property value impacts.
Many Peru residents received a letter from the developer on Sept. 11 stating that he’s moving ahead with the permitting process regardless of the vote on July 8. I implore the townspeople of Peru to come out and stand tall against this ill wind blowing through town. Come to all town meetings. The Board of Selectmen have graciously moved the meetings to the spacious gym in Town Hall on Mondays at 6 p.m. Also, watch for postings for upcoming planning board and zoning board meetings.
