Wind turbine bid given green light

Plans for a controversial 132-metre high wind turbine in Newthorpe have been given the green light.
The structure, which will be slightly shorter than the London Eye, is to be built at the Severn Trent sewage treatment works in Halls Lane.
The turbine is expected to generate up to 6,000 megawatt hours annually – the equivalent of the power used by 1,350 households – and saving around 2,065 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
But the vote came down to the wire as, of the ten councillors who voted, five voted for and five against.
Broxtowe Borough Council’s planning committee chairman Councillor Steve Barber cast the deciding vote in favour of the scheme.
Greg Marshall, Labour councillor for Beeston West, said: “If we are going to develop in the future we need to look at renewable energy sources.”
Lydia Ball, Tory councillor for Awsworth, said: “My concern is for the people who live near the site and the impact it will have on the beauty of the Erewash valley.”
Parish and town councils in Eastwood, Greasley and Awsworth had objected to the plans, believing the turbine would be detrimental to the beauty of the area, as well as affecting wildlife.
Last night’s meeting was delayed for about half-an-hour when a member of the public became ill. Paramedics attended and took him to hospital.
