Wind turbine plan gets the go-ahead

Planning permission has been granted for a wind farm to be built near Merthyr Tydfil.
The Fochriw Wind Energy Project developed by Eco2 at Gelligaer Common will be able to generate enough electricity to power 1,245 homes.
Approval has been given by Caerphilly Borough Council for the two turbine project on private land ““ owned by local men Alun Jones and Martin Jones.
Eco2 has announced that local companies can tender for contracts for the project.
As well as creating construction jobs, the development is expected to bring £5,000 a year in community benefits, equivalent to £125,000 over the 25 year life of the installation.
David Williams, managing director, of Eco2 said, “This is a small but important wind project, as it demonstrates that even smaller scale developments can make a significant contribution to the renewable energy needs of local areas. Fochriw demonstrates the positive impact that wind projects can make to local communities in Wales.”
Alun Jones said, “I am delighted to be associated with Eco2 in this the first wind project in the Heads of the Valleys area.”
But John Jenkins, of campaign group South Wales Alternatives to Turbines (Swatt), said the turbines would affect tourism, health and house prices in the area.
