Wind energy project still on the table

OTTAWA – Tuesday’s monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting featured Jim O’Conner a Business Developer for Iberdrola Renewables who spoke about the benefits of wind energy and specifically how wind energy effects Ohio.
Iberdrola Renewables is headquartered in Portland, Oregon and recently opened a satellite office in Leipsic.
O’Connor works out of Radnor, Pennsylvania and also oversee’s projects throughout Ohio.
Some of the benefits O’Conner covered had to do with the effects wind energy sites would have on this area. In referencing a report called “Energizing Ohio’s Economy” written by the Environment Ohio Research and Policy Center he showed the many different ways residents benefit from the construction of wind turbines.
O’Conner said that one turbine takes just under one acre but the economic return on that turbine is well over the amount of money the farmer would get in growing crops on that land.
Iberdrola prides itself in blending the turbines into the landscape and providing as little disruption as possible to the land they are placed on by only placing one turbine per 100 acres.
Construction of the turbines would create a large development for jobs and most of the employees would be from Ohio.
Iberdrola Renewables has been studying the Leipsic area for almost two years to possibly construct a wind energy farm in Van Buren Township.
In a comment to the recent allegations of the project being called off, O’Conner said they are very optimistic for their future with Van Buren Township. He continued to say, Iberdrola is continuing to work towards the project and prepare the site for turbines.
O’Conner also said that the project still needs to go before the state sitting board and should do so in early 2011.
Comprised of seven state entities, the Ohio Power Sitting Board’s main objective is to support policies that provide for the installation of energy capacity for the benefit of the Ohio citizens. The board is put in place to promote the state’s economic interests and protect the environment and land use.
Currently the Iberdrola has meteorologic towers constructed in Van Buren township to study to the effects of wind resources. Generally a tower will have anemometers, wind direction vanes and other measurement devices attached to it at various levels above the ground.
The satellite office is located on Main Street in Leipsic.
