€50 million windfarm may still go ahead

The development of a €50 million wind farm on the Clare/Galway border, which had promised to create some 75 jobs for the local economy, may still go ahead in some form despite the opposition of An Bord Pleanala.
The planning appeals board last week overturned a decision by Galway County Council to grant Keelderry Wind farms permission to go ahead with the €50 million wind farm planned for an isolated area in the Slieve Aughty mountains.
However, The Clare People has learned that the company was successful in obtaining an extension to a previous planning permission dating back to 2002, which allows it to construct a 48 turbine wind farm at the site.
The latest application was turned down by An Bord Pleanála after an objection by Birdwatch Ireland. The project, which is a joint venture between Keelderry Windfarm and Bord Gais, was rejected because the project could adversely affect the protected Hen Harrier.
