Group challenges Kenyon, Minn. wind energy project

A new group is trying to block the Kenyon Wind project, a proposed 18.9 megawatt wind farm in southeastern Minnesota.
Citizens for Environmental Rights and Safety filed a petition last week with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission. President Mike Chase said members don’t oppose wind energy but want more time spent on examining the proposal.
The PUC will consider the issues raised in the petition when it decides whether to order a contested case hearing for the proposed nine-turbine wind farm in Goodhue County. The PUC is tentatively scheduled to consider the request for such a hearing May 3.
“There are many potential and probable environmental impacts associated with this project,” Red Wing attorney Carol Overland wrote in the petition.
The petition raised concerns about the project’s effect on nearby people, land values, and noise and safety.
The project’s chief manager, John Daniels, said in a letter filed with the PUC that “objections to the project are primarily aesthetic and the concerns expressed are not substantive.”
