Our pledge to fight

Residents say they will turn out in force to fight wind farm plans earmarked for approval.

Proposals by developer Novera Energy for 12 turbines, each up to 125 metres (410ft) tall at Lissett, near Driffield, will be considered by East Riding Council’s planning committee on Tuesday.

People who oppose the development will be at County Hall in Beverley to hear the decision.

They have been told not to talk to councillors as they go into the meeting but are considering taking placards.

Stop Turbines In East Riding (Stier) member Jeanette Cawkwell, 41, of Gransmoor, said: “Novera is not thinking about what is right for this community and they are not looking at the impact this will have on residents.

“These turbines would be too close to houses. People live in front of where the turbines will be going.

“This is a totally inappropriate site.”

John and Christine Garland live in the former officers’ mess at the airfield where the turbines would be built.

Mr Garland, 65, said: “If we step into our garden, we’ll be able to see them.

“We’re on raised ground here and the airfield is on a lower level, so we’re going to get the full impact of the turbines.”

Planning officers have recommended councillors approve the development.

David Taylor, project co-ordinator for Novera, said: “We’re very confident about this opportunity. There seems to be an understanding something has to be done.

“We feel this is an appropriate development without the environmental impact of other proposals.”

The plans for Lissett will be considered on Tuesday at 1pm, alongside plans for wind farms at Routh, near Beverley, and Barmby On The Marsh, near Selby.

People in favour of and against each proposal will speak in front of the committee at a pre-planning meeting at 10am on Monday in Beverley.
