Politicians seek moratorium on wind turbines

Credit:  BY STEPHEN DYELL | www.whatsonthorold.com 31 July 2012 ~~

The fight for wind energy is just getting started with more names growing on a list of those pushing for a moratorium on wind turbines across Ontario.

PC Leader Tim Hudak is leading the charge calling for a complete halt to wind turbine farms across the province until proper research has been conducted by Health Canada. The study is scheduled to be completed in 2014 which left many wind energy giants shaking their head.

TSP Canada Towers Inc. has begun construction on retrofitting Thorold’s former Dana Plant into a wind turbine facility scheduled to produce the controversial energy product. Resumes from hundreds of local residents have already begun filling in for the new business in Thorold – yet looming on the horizon is opposition pushing for other means of energy.

“The move to alternative energy producing methods have been in the works for many years and wind and solar have been on the side line for a long time. This is due primarily to the manufacturing cost of the new technology equipment,” Thorold’s Chief Administrative Officer Frank Fabiano said via email.

“Coal plants are very cheap to run but the health related issues associated with this method of producing electricity are well documented. Health is the main reason the current government elected to shut-down the coal fired plants in Ontario.”

Fabiano, who played a major role in gaining the $25 million investment to Thorold, has been following the involvement of Health Canada and believes it is a good thing to check the safety precautions before setting wind turbines across Ontario’s land. He has also read numerous reports from across the world on research done by separate organizations on the potential dangers of the turbines.

“I believe that once the study is complete that the results will be positive as found by other research completed outside of Canada and in fact the results will help manufacturers like TSP gain positive momentum in the electricity producing industry,” he said.

The research conducted by Health Canada will focus on individuals living near wind turbines will be tested for blood pressure and other ailments consistently being mentioned in news reports from those in the affected areas.

“I’ve been to dozens of town halls across the province and have heard the painful stories of those who’ve reported these adverse health effects,” PC Energy Critic and Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli stated in a press release as their party is urging Stephen Harper to put a stop to wind farms in Ontario.

Their opposition goes further than just health related concerns with costs for the turbines are deemed ‘dismal failure for Ontarians’.

“Wind power is helping drive up the cost of Ontario electricity to second-highest in North America, killing jobs and our competitiveness. It also is generated at times we don’t need it creating surplus power we have to sell at a loss, and isn’t there when we need it, as was seen during last week’s heat wave,” Fedeli said.

Thorold MP Malcolm Allen believes that residents should have a right to voice their opinions on the giant towers being erected in their backyard, stating that the government must give a listen to everyone involved in the situation.

“Green energy shouldn’t be exempt from regulatory approval,” Allen said of the process that goes behind the scenes for the oil and nuclear energy production in Canada as he awaits the Federal government’s decision.

“It’s an ongoing piece and we await the results.”

A moratorium on wind turbines was turned down in March by the Liberals and NDP as they planned to move forward on a study that will cost nearly $1.5 million over the two year period. Hudak is again voicing his displeasure in allowing wind farms to be implemented before the study is complete with Lincoln and surrounding areas are scheduled to have 77 turbines in their backyard.

With both sides stating their case on wind energy, the right answer seems to be in question. Some say wind energy is clean, safe and the future while opposition states it’s dangerous, expensive and has no place in Ontario, the true answer to the hot topic is still years away.
