Strong turnout for wind farm discussion

www.abc.net.au

The strength of feeling on the Monaro over plans for a wind farm industry in the area has been demonstrated with a turnout of more than 250 people to discuss the controversial issue.

The Cooma-Monaro, Bombala, and Snowy River Shires are facing increasing pressure to have the turbines established on a number of sites across the region.

Friday night’s forum was an information session and no vote was taken on the future of wind farms.

However, Cooma-Monaro Mayor Roger Norton says there was a realisation that wind farms could assist in breaking the long-term dependence upon fossil fuel.

“There seemed to be an understanding that climate change had produced an urgent need to do something about renewable sources and if some of that need could be wind farms, we needed to carefully examine every application to see that it was able to be proceeded without offending some of the members of the community,” he said.
