Offshore wind farm’s cable link to go underground

A report on an offshore wind farm plan which involves laying a 12 kilometre underground cable through the East Lothian countryside is now available for comment.
Neart na Gaoithe Wind Ltd, a subsidiary company of Mainstream Renewable Power Ltd, is hoping to site up to 125 wind turbines in the outer Forth Estuary – 15.5 km east of Fife Ness and about 28 km from the East Lothian coast.
The grid connection point for the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm, gaelic for ‘strength of the wind,’ would be located at a new sub-station next to the existing sub-station at Crystal Rig II onshore wind farm in the Lammermuir Hills.
The marine cable on the sea bed would come ashore at Thorntonloch beach near Dunbar, joining the land based cable in a field behind the beach which would cross the A1, the East Coast Mainline and farmland before going below the access road to Crystal Rig.
“The cable would be buried and the land restored. The only thing people would see above the ground would be the new sub-station,” stressed Ewan Walker, an Environmental Developer for Mainstream Renewable Power.
