Antrim voters nix wind energy ordinances

ANTRIM – Antrim voters Tuesday voted down two zoning ordinances regarding wind energy facilities.

The first, rejected 501-309, would have regulated construction of large-scale wind energy projects, while the second, rejected 584-225, would restrict wind energy development to areas outside the town’s Rural Conservation District.

The ordinances were endorsed by the planning board but not by selectmen. They urged voters to vote both down, saying they were too restrictive and would prohibit wind energy development in half of the town.

Portsmouth-based Eolian Renewable Energy, through its subsidiary Antrim Wind Energy, has proposed a 10-turbine facility on Tuttle Hill. In August, the company indicated the project would exceed 30 megawatts, moving it under the jurisdiction of state regulators who may overlook local ordinances.
