Wind Turbine Noise and the Brain — Copenhagen seminar
(Copenhagen)
Ken Mattsson is professor in scientific computing at Uppsala University. Mattsson has together with Gustav Eriksson developed SoundSim360 that is based on more than 25 years of research. The infrasound measurements are performed by José Chilo, Kourosh Tartar and Leif Persson. This is the recording of his lecture "Separating Myth from Fact on Wind Turbine Noise" in Copenhagen 8 October 2025.
The second lecture from this seminar, “Infrasound Affects the Brain”, is given by Dr. Håkan Enbom, M.D., Ph.., E.N.T. specialist, otoneurologist, Ängelhoms. [It is delivered in Swedish, but the slides are in English. You can set Youtube to generate subtitles by clicking Settings, Subtitles/CC, Auto-translate, and selecting your desired language.]
These lectures are here by courtesy of Landsforeningen Naboer til Kæmpevindmøller.
Wind turbines emit infrasound and it is spread at least 10 km in levels proven to be affecting humans. This is ignored by agencies and the industry. Sound power levels stated by manufacturers are one of the biggest lies since it is not a constant and can vary by more than 20 dB higher during a day. The atmosphere is important for the propagation of the sound.
Traffic noise causes cardiovascular disease and big loss in productivity, but no one is talking about noise from wind turbines.
Simple methods like Nord2000 or the even simpler method that agencies in Denmark use are not working. They are underestimating the sound and you can change the parameters to get the result you want.
Sound, including infrasound, from wind turbines is very disturbing because it is pulsating.
The A-weighted scale dB is misused since it isn’t suitable for describing infrasound and low-frequency sound.
A suggested safe distance to wind turbines is probably 5-10 km according to professor Ken Mattsson.
Her ser du optagelsen af hans forelæsning "Separating Myth from Fact on Wind Turbine Noise", som han gav i København d. 8. oktober 2025.
