Three giant wind turbines could be erected on a picturesque ridge near Millbrook in South East Cornwall.
The 90-metre turbines, standing on a hilltop more than 90 metres above sea level, would be visible from Plymouth, Plymstock and Dartmoor.
REG Windpower, which has submitted a “scoping document” to Cornwall Council, is meeting residents in St John village hall at 7.30pm tomorrow.
Vice Admiral Sir John Coward, who lives in the village, said: “People who visit Cornwall come here to get away from things like this. If they find we have wind turbines they won’t come and Cornwall will get even poorer.
“This has come as a surprise. We’ve phoned lots of local people and nobody knew anything about it.
“We will see it as we go out of our driveway. The whole point of a wind farm is that it’s on the skyline.”
Ray Wooldock, a member of St John Parish Council, said: “It has been a surprise. It is going to be right on the skyline and visible from most of Plymouth and Dartmoor.”
A spokeswoman for Truro-based REG Windpower said they were at a very early stage and had not yet submitted a planning application.
“We will be undertaking a variety of consultation activities including one-to-one meetings with immediate neighbours, parish council presentations, public exhibitions, written briefings and a project website. A Freephone information line (0800 169 8766) will be operational throughout the process to respond to community queries.”
She said they would set up a community fund to benefit local causes.
The company wants to put up three 330KW wind turbines at Mendennick Hill, Hunster Farm and Withnoe Lane, on farmland north of Millbrook Business Park and west of Torpoint, near the hamlet of Penhale. The nearest homes are about 380 metres away.
David Moore, conservation officer for the Historic Environment Service, said: “I have very strong reservations about the installation of wind turbines in this area.
“There are a large number of historic fortifications and historic buildings in this area: Tregantle and Tregonhawke forts, Maker Church and Rame Chapel.
“It would be inappropriate for any large structures to be positioned on this peninsula which would compete and interrupt the setting of these important listed and scheduled structures.”
