Controversial wind farm plans reduced

Controversial plans for a wind farm near East Huntspill have been resubmitted – but opponents have vowed to fight them all the way.
EDF Energy Renewables has submitted revised plans with Sedgemoor District Council for five 126-metre high turbines at Withy End Farm.
Although EDF has reduced the number of proposed turbines from nine, in a bid to reduce the “visual and ecological impact” on the area, opponents insist Withy End Farm is still the wrong place for a wind farm.
Julie Trott, of the West Huntspill Action Group, said campaigners were already braced for an appeal from EDF should the council reject the plans.
She also urged the council to consider the cumulative effect on the area of EDF’s scheme and another separate bid from Ecotricity for five turbines at Black Ditch, West Huntspill.
She said: “The wind farm will have a huge impact on the people of East Huntspill.
“It’s on a flight path and we do have our concerns about the birds and the noise. It’s not the turbines but where they want to put them.”
Dennis Garry, EDF Energy Renewable’s development manager for the project, said the Withy End Farm site was “very suitable” for the development, adding that the plans had been revised following a comprehensive environment impact assessment and consultation with the public.
He added: “Renewable energy projects like at Withy End demonstrate our commitment to diverse energy sources and the importance EDF Energy places on sustainable development.”
