Albany neighbors plan meeting on potential wind farm

ALBANY – Neighbors concerned about the possibility a 200-megawatt wind farm will be built near their homes are holding a meeting Monday to discuss the impact.
Scout Clean Power LLC, a renewable energy development company based in Boulder, Colorado, built a 198-foot-tall “temporary meteorological tower” in Garden Plain Township in mid-December to test the speed and direction of the winds there, to determine whether such a project would be feasible.
The test tower at 12967 Kennedy Road will be there at least a year before any decisions are made, Cara Gunderson, a project manager with Scout, has said.
If the tests prove fruitful, though, the company plans to seek approval from Whiteside County to build Gipper Wind Farm, which likely would require about 75 to 100 turbines to achieve an output of 200 megawatts a year.
Arlene Considine said she opposes wind farms because they are noisy, kill birds and bring down property values. She and a handful of other nearby property owners are organizing the meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Albany Fire Department, 409 S. Church St.
