Residents Say NO to Turbines
The campaign to stop industrial wind turbines in Broome County from being erected by the Texas-based Calpine Corporation is coming to a climax this month. Since they found out about these secret, well advanced plans earlier this year, local people in eastern Broome have been battling against this proposal for the installation of massive industrial wind turbines, nearly 700 feet high, on the steep slopes overlooking the towns of Windsor and Deposit. When placed atop these picturesque hills, the turbines would be taller than the Empire State building.
Public hearing on new wind law
This Tuesday, December 10th, the Sanford Town Board will be making a decision on a new wind law, provided that the County Planning Board will have finished their review of the new law. The changes were proposed by the town’s planning board to provide better protection for local residents. The campaigners are adamant that the town must put this new law in place and vote it on the books right away. Anne Lawrence, spokesperson for Broome County Concerned Residents (BCCR), said she was expecting a large contingent of ‘yellow shirt’ supporters to turn up at the town meeting to make sure the grave fears and concerns of local people would not be ignored. Demand for public input
Later this month, the campaign intends to take the issue to the Siting Board in Albany where final decisions will be made about the turbine proposals. Lawrence explained that “We want to get to the Siting Board and protest how we are being steamrolled by Calpine, which wants the Siting Board to ignore the moratorium or a potential new local wind law. They have disclosed none of the ‘inconvenient truths’ about this project and have done all the planning without any real public input. It is time for the public to be heard and for the Siting Board to apply the substantive local law, as it is mandated by article 10”.
Eagles, lakes, hills, fish, and river water all at great risk
Other issues to be highlighted at the Town Board meeting will include environmental damage ranging from massive deforestation, soil erosion, the slaughter of golden eagles and the destruction of game fish spawning grounds. At least one lake, Deer Lake, could be destroyed by Calpine’s construction work. There are also plans by Calpine to remove 100,000 gallons of water every day from local rivers.
