WINTERSET, Iowa – A final vote was held Tuesday that halts wind and solar projects in Madison County for one year.

The Board of Supervisors had already voted in favor of the moratorium twice. On Tuesday, a moratorium to pause construction of wind and solar projects for one year was passed.

The Board passed the ordinance on a 2-1 vote. It bans all construction of wind turbines, wind farms and commercial solar energy systems in the county until October 2020.

The Board will work on a new ordinance over the next year to replace the moratorium.

The Madison County Board of Health already passed a resolution deeming wind turbines a potential health hazard. The board said the turbines shouldn’t be constructed within 1 1/2 miles of nonparticipating homes.

Critics say there is no evidence of health issues with wind turbines.

The moratorium would not change the construction of already-approved projects, such as the Arbor Hill Wind Farm.
