A giant wind turbine has been destroyed in a fire.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at the wind farm, at High Swainston Farm, close to the A689 running between Wynyard and Sedgefield, before 6pm on Thursday.

One of the turbines had caught alight where the blade is attached to the tower.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from as far at the A19 flyover.

Two fire crews from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue remained at the scene at 7pm.

The blade later fell from the tower and fell to the ground. Grass at the base of the tower then also set alight.
