Wind mast plans rejected

Controversial plans to put up a 60-metre high meterological mast at Preston Capes were rejected last night (Wednesday).

Daventry District Council’s planning committee threw out the proposal after strong protests from residents and five parish councils, saying the mast would be a risk to low-flying aircraft and would visually ruin the surrounding countryside.

The mast, which would have been situated on Preston Fields Farm in Charwelton Road, was designed to measure weather and in particular the wind speeds, with a view to building a small number of wind turbines.

Nearby Redhouse Farm Airfield objected to the proposal on the grounds that it would impede established fly zones.

The council received 314 letters from residents objecting to the proposal while parish councils including Preston Capes, Farthingstone and Woodford Halse were opposed to the application.

Edward Giles, a resident of the Preston Capes parish, told the meeting: “The mast is visually intrusive and there will be a serious risk to air safety. This proposal can not go ahead while such a serious issue has not been resolved.”

Bernadette Rodgers, chairman of Woodford-cum-Membris Parish council, said: “We called a public meeting and a 180 people attended. At the end of the meeting, we voted and only two members voted for the mast to be approved.”
