Kiltimagh wind farm appeal fails

An Bord Pleanala has rejected an appeal by a partnership from Kiltimagh to grant planning permission to build a wind farm in the Nephin Beg mountain range, writes David Gilbert. Mayo County Council had already denied permission for the project and An Bord Pleanála’s decision was made on the grounds of a technicality.

Cnoc Mhuire Partnership, Main Street, Kiltimagh, had its appeal initially turned down on October 30th last due to an invalid appellant address on the appeal form, a spokesperson from An Bord Pleanála told the Western People.

The developers had four weeks to rely but since An Bord Pleanála did not receive their revised application until November 27th last the appeal was refused for being a day too late.

The initial planning application for a three turbine wind farm was turned down on grounds that it was going to damage the scenic beauty of the surrounding countryside.

The wind farm was due to be constructed in an area less than 500 metres from a candidate Special Area of Conservation. The site on the northern side of Bullamore Mountain is close to Bunaveela Lake and the Deel River, and lies around seven miles from Bellacorrick power station. The three turbines would have a combined capacity of 6.9 megawatts. The area in question, under the new County Development Plan, would have been in an area which was zoned as unsuitable for development of wind farms and, therefore, it is unlikely that the project will get the go ahead in the future.
