Setbacks not same in all communities

In the Janesville Gazette article from Nov. 11, 2007, Wes Slaymaker of EcoEnergy is quoted as saying that EcoEnergy’s setbacks are at least 1,150 feet from a home. He points to a project they have in the permitting process called EcoDane Wind, which will be only six turbines in Springfield Township in Dane County. In that project, one turbine is 1,275 feet from a home and the others are 1,300 feet or more. Currently Calumet County ordinance is only 1000 feet from a home.
On Nov. 3 a trip was taken to the Crescent Ridge wind farm in Illinois to show people that living near wind turbines isn’t so bad. I don’t know how you can compare 30 turbines with setbacks much greater than 1,000 feet and few non-participating landowners affected, to 150 turbines scattered throughout many non participating homes and as close as 1,000 feet. One landlord hosting some of the Crescent Ridge turbines lives four miles away. Crescent Ridge had issues with TV interference and getting satisfaction from out of state contractors used during construction. One non participating landowner said that he doesn’t open his windows because of the noise. He has recorded decibel readings much higher than our current ordinance level of 50dba.
Crescent Ridge was the second wind farm tour. Monfort was the first. Neither is a comparison to the Calumet County project. In Monfort there are approximately 20 turbines in one area surrounded by the participating landowners.
In reference to Merlin Gentz’s comments in the Post Crescent, since you wouldn’t mind living 1,000 feet from a turbine, I have a nice country home for you. I will have it appraised before the turbines go up.
If it weren’t for concerned citizens in Calumet County pushing the County Board, they’d spend more time researching and buying a new TV than they’d spend researching the placement of 150-plus 400-foot industrial wind turbines. Forcing wind turbines in where they don’t belong is not the answer. There are plenty of suitable areas for turbines; 1,000 feet from a home is not one of them. It’s insane to rush into this when we have the Johnsburg wind farm a few miles away. Why not see what happens there first.
