Cherry Co. zoning recommends wind energy restriction

The Cherry County Planning and Zoning Board has recommended two amendments to regulations regarding industrial wind energy.

According to a press release from Preserve the Sandhills, a citizens’ advocacy group, the amendments were considered at the planning and zoning board meeting on Jan. 15. The first amendment was sponsored by area rancher Wayne Etinger and “would essentially ban industrial wind from the county.” It was recommended for approval to the Cherry County Commissioners on a vote of four to two, according to the release.

The second amendment “would reclassify wind projects from a commercial designation to industrial which would require industrial wind to have the same setbacks as a feedlot.”

It was sponsored by businessman Billy Weller, said the release, and was approved for recommendation to the county commissioners on a vote of five to one.

Cherry County Commissioners meet on the second and last Tuesdays of the month at 10 a.m. in the courthouse. Meeting agendas are posted on the county web site at least 24 hours ahead of the meeting.

Before considering the proposals, commissioners will need to set a date for a public hearing. Such consideration may be added to the agenda for next Tuesday’s meeting, Storer said. Commissionher meeting agendas are posted at co.cherry.ne.us/board_meetings/agenda.aspx
