Potential wind farm stirs controversy

TYRONE, Pa. – A vote by the Tyrone Borough council could mean 15 windmills atop Ice Mountain in Tyrone. But before the council casts votes, they want to weigh the pros and cons.
Lori Walk said there is a lot of game land on Ice Mountain. People hunt there, hike there and really enjoy the land.
The Mayor Jim Kilmartin said hundreds of residents like Walk have already voiced their opposition to the turbines. They’re concerned about the ridgetops, the wildlife and the noise. Kilmartin said the problem is, he thinks those not opposed to the turbines are keeping mum.
Gamesa will be holding an open house to answer questions Wednesday night.
Kilmartin said the problem is, the open house will not be a floor open to debate, so those adamantly opposed to the wind farm might not be heard.
Kilmartin is pushing for another meeting, so the public, Gamesa and nature preservation groups can all speak their peace before the council has to make a decision.
Those who eye Ice Mountain everyday agreed that an open forum is a good idea, so everyone can offer their input.
Kilmartin said the next Borough council meeting is Monday, and he would be very surprised if they make a decision by then.
