What is next and what can I do?

Credit:  The Advertiser-Tribune | Oct 10, 2018 | www.advertiser-tribune.com ~~

If you have been following the highly contentious wind turbine projects, you will know there is so much happening at such a rapid rate that it is nearly impossible to keep up with the statuses of both of the proposed projects in Seneca County. I have had people tell me that they are voting “no” on the wind turbine projects on the November ballot because they are against them. Unfortunately, there is no such vote.

I have had people ask me why we still are fighting because the wind turbine companies have already started construction on the wind turbine projects. That is not true. I have had people call me in a panic after reading that sPower’s Seneca Wind project has become a certified as a “qualified energy project” with the development director of Ohio and they thought this meant sPower now has the approval it needs to start erecting the first of its 85 massive industrial wind turbines. At this time, neither project has been approved for construction by the Ohio Power Siting Board.

At 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (doors open at 4:45 p.m.) the Seneca Anti-Wind Union is hosting a huge public meeting at Camden Falls, 2460 SR 231, in Tiffin. This meeting will clear up any and all misconceptions that currently are out there with regard to these two wind projects. We are super excited to have announced that our state representative, Bill Reineke, will be our main speaker. Reineke will kick off this public meeting by speaking to all of us about his statement that he submitted publicly on the evening of June 27 regarding House Sub-Bill 114/SB 238. In an excerpt from that statement, Reineke made it clear that, “Based on my continued engagement with the constituents, I have come to the conclusion that no changes should be made to Ohio’s current wind turbine setbacks.”

This is our opportunity to show Reineke and others that he is on the right side of this issue by having a massive turnout at the meeting. TV news crews, newspapers and other media coverage will be on hand to capture this story of local residents standing up to the big wind companies.

Following Reineke, we will have Seneca County Commissioner Mike Kerschner speak. Kerschner will talk about the wind turbine projects and their impact on the county level. Kerschner has made it clear that the alternative energy zone needs to be rescinded by the county immediately. This is due in part to the tens of millions of dollars that we are leaving on the table with the AEZ in place because it automatically grants approval of the payment in lieu of taxes payments.

These PILOT payments guarantee huge tax abatement savings for these multinational wind turbine companies. Without the AEZ in place, Seneca County would at least have some local negotiation power with these companies. There are many questions on exactly what powers the county has in these projects, and Kerschner will help to clearly explain what our commissioners can do.

Wrapping up the meeting will be Greg Smith, who is a concerned landowner in the Seneca Wind project footprint. Greg is member of our SAWU group and he will be presenting a very informative PowerPoint presentation that has been tailored specifically for this meeting. It will include all the important facts, information and recent developments. His presentation will aim to answer any of your questions that you may currently have. It will also give you a detailed outline of what you can do to help stop these two projects that are proposed for our county!

As always, if you want to know more, there are a couple of ways to do so. You can review our Seneca Anti-Wind Union Facebook page; you can sign up for email alerts and receive our Wind Breaker newsletter by sending a short email to senecaantiwind@

hushmail.com. Finally we recently have formed a partnership with the website saveourskylineohio.com.

See you Tuesday, doors open at 4:45 p.m., and the meeting will promptly start at 5:30 p.m.
