Governor announces grant for land-based wind farm

Gov. Rod Blagojevich has announced a $2.2 million grant to a 198-megawatt wind-power project in eastern McClean County.

The grant will go to Houston-based Horizon Wind Energy to help build the first phase of a planned 400-megawatt wind farm. It would be one of the largest land-based wind farms in the world when completed by the end of 2007.

The governor’s office said the project will create about 250 construction jobs and up to 40 permanent jobs. The project could satisfy the energy needs of approximately 120,000 homes.

“If we invest now in wind power and other environmentally friendly energy options, within ten years, we’ll be able to produce enough energy from our own natural resources to cut our dependence on foreign energy in half,” Blagojevich said in a statement.

The grant comes from the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Renewable Energy Resource Program.
