MONTEREY – More than 10 years after its approval, nothing has officially changed with a controversial wind energy project in western Highland County.

A county conditional use permit remains valid in perpetuity. The developer recently hinted to a county official that work on the project would begin this summer.

Building and zoning administrator Joshua Simmons said Highland New Wind Development LLC, owned by the McBride family, is up to date as of last fall on erosion control and stormwater management permits. Tal McBride said the company was finishing a solar project in North Carolina, Simmons told The Recorder. Simmons said he was led to believe during the same conversation that McBride planned to begin work on the wind project this summer after completion of the solar project. “But there’s no construction activity at present” in Highland, Simmons said, adding HNWD needs to give seven business days’ notice before construction can begin.
