Penn Forest hires consulting engineer for wind turbine matters

With all of the different issues related to Atlantic Wind’s proposed wind turbine project in Penn Forest Township, the township supervisors have hired an engineer to advise them specifically on the project.

Richard B. Kresge of BCM Engineers of Clarks Summit was hired at a rate of $115 per hour.

“He will be advising the township and myself about matters before the zoning hearing board, the Court of Common Pleas and on any zoning amendments going forward,” said township solicitor Thomas Nanovic Jr.

Chairman of the township’s board of supervisors Warren Reiner said that three firms were interviewed but that Kresge had more experience with wind turbines.

When contacted, Kresge said he is on the planning board of Bear Creek Township, which has dealt with two wind turbine projects. One of the projects was approved and resulted in 12 turbines being installed. The other project was rejected.

Kresge said his firm is highly experienced in dealing with matters related to land development projects and in dealing with the various approving agencies.

Two applications are pending for the project in the township. The first application for 37 wind turbines to be installed on property owned by the Bethlehem Water Authority is currently approved, but is being appealed in the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas. The second application is for fewer, but larger, wind turbines on the same property and is currently before the township zoning hearing board.

The next hearing before the zoning hearing board will take place at 6 tonight at the Penn Forest Volunteer Fire Company No. 1.
