Offshore wind company partners with Red Sox

BOSTON – An offshore wind energy company that is bidding on electricity contracts in Massachusetts has partnered with the Boston Red Sox to enact sustainability projects at Fenway Park. The Danish company Orsted, which has partnered with Eversource as Bay State Wind, announced its professional baseball initiative Thursday.
“We see this strategic partnership as part of our continued commitment to bringing green energy to Massachusetts,” Orsted North America president Thomas Brostrom said.
Green energy projects already underway at Fenway Park are single-stream recycling, composting and the “Fenway Farms” rooftop garden, where produce and herbs are grown for use in food served at the park, according to the announcement.
The partnership with Orsted will allow the Red Sox to explore more ways to use green energy, said Troup Parkinson, Red Sox executive vice president of partnerships. Orsted and the Red Sox will work on projects and events throughout the coming season. Orsted’s partnership with the Red Sox will include supporting the Fenway Farms initiative, organizing the park’s annual Sustainability Day and providing daily sustainability tips to share with audiences, Orsted spokeswoman Lauren Burm said.
With its North American headquarters in Boston, Orstead develops, constructs and operates offshore wind farms, bioenergy plants and waste-to-energy facilities with 5,600 employees.
Legislation in 2016 opened a path in Massachusetts for offshore wind energy companies to sell 1,600 megawatts of wind energy by 2027. In December, Bay State Wind, Deepwater Wind and Vineyard Wind all submitted bids to the state Department of Energy Resources, and an announcement of the bidders selected for negotiations will be made April 23.
