Turbines fight gains backing

The fight to stop a major wind farm on the outskirts of Hunmanby has received another boost after neighbouring councillors waded into the battle.
Scarborough Council officials last week threw out proposals to mount an 80m wind monitoring mast to the south-east of the village by Banks Renewables.
The mast would have been a precursor to 14 potential turbines.
However, replying to a campaign from the No to Wolds Wind Farm group, East Riding Conservative councillors Jonathan Owen and Jane Evison revealed their stance on blocking any wind farm development.
Speaking before the local elections, they said: “We strongly oppose any proliferation of wind-turbines on the Yorkshire Wolds.
“We feel they are inefficient and highly intrusive on the landscape and are yet to be convinced of their effectiveness.
“Whilst appreciating the need to ensure clean energy production for future generations, we feel that there needs to be much more open and innovative debate at national level regards alternatives.”
The Mercury approached Banks Renewables for a comment on the situation but the company declined.
A spokesman added it was awaiting confirmation of the exact reasons for the decision to turn down the application before deciding on its next move.
