Town of Arcade: Alle-Catt wind farm project to include small portion of Arcade

Marguerite Wells of Invenergy was present at the Monday, Jan. 15 meeting to discuss the wind farm project in the area, Alle-Catt Wind, which will include a portion of the Town of Arcade. The project is slated to include portions of Centerville, Freedom, Farmersville, Rushford, Arcade, and Yorkshire.

“We are subdividing a little corner of the old billiards spot, that is mostly going to be an antique shop, and they’ve built us a little dividing wall so we have an office there on the left-hand side,” Wells said. “The goal of that office is just public information. If anyone wants to come learn more about the wind project and look at maps, have someone to talk to or ask questions or whatever it is, that’s what that is for.”

“It’s a big project area we’re looking at,” Wells said, as she laid out the map for board members to see. “Most of the turbines would be in Freedom and Centerville, half of Farmersville has turbines proposed, and a little corner of Rushford, and then the transmission line would connect to the grid over there in Yorkshire.”

There would only be a small amount of turbines in the Town of Arcade, and that swath of land is located on Route 39 S, almost on the boundaries of the town.

“It would be up in the hills there, because of course that’s where turbines have to go,” Wells said. She also estimated that the electricity produced would be roughly 40 megawatts just in the Town of Arcade. The whole project area would include roughly 100 turbines.

Wells said that Invenergy has been leasing land now for about a year and a half, and has almost all of the land needed for the turbines, with just a few pieces to be added here and there in the near future.

“Sometimes we have people calling us saying, ‘What about my hill over here?’ and sometimes that works out,” Wells said.

The goal, Wells explained, is to have the project up and running by the end of 2020.

After Wells’ presentation, Supervisor Doug Berwanger suggested that the board reach out to Joe Kushner, who was the supervisor in the Town of Eagle when they made their wind deal with Noble Energy. Berwanger said that Kushner is an excellent negotiator and already knows his way around the wind energy project process, and could help Arcade get the best deal possible.

In other discussion:

• The reorganizational items were taken care of, and board members Pat Palmerton and Barry Ashworth were sworn in to their positions, as well as Berwanger and Justice Sherry Bell-Beyer.
