Parishville man to keep his seat on state wind farm siting board

PARISHVILLE – Parishville resident Gary Snell will keep his seat on the state siting board overseeing a wind project in Hopkinton, even though Parishville will no longer be a host community.
Snell spoke with Hon. Kathleen H. Burgess, who oversees the siting board at the Department of Public Service (DPS), and said she told him she reviewed the statutes and found no reason he could no longer be an ad hoc member.
The firm hoping to build a wind turbine farm in St. Lawrence County pulled out of Parishville and will now only plan to build in Hopkinton.
He said he will represent St. Lawrence County as a whole when he sits on the board.
No timetable has been given as to when he would be needed, but Snell said it will be quite awhile.
“They still haven’t placed their application, then it needs to be reviewed…we are months or even a year away,” Snell said.
He said there has only been one case in the state where the siting board went through with the Article 10 process and that it only took the committee about an hour to reach their decision.
“In that instance, everyone was in favor of the project – no one was against it and no questions were asked – so it depends how the project goes,” he said.
Snell said he relies on the DPS website for updates on the project.
