Windmill construction topic of planning commission

Putting up windmills in Schuylkill County was discussed by members of the Schuylkill County Planning Commission at its monthly meeting held Wednesday evening at the courthouse in Pottsville.

The subject was discussed while acting on the application of Locust Ridge II Wind Farm, which is seeking to add 27 more wind mills on its wind farm in Union Township. There are already 13 windmills which exist on the land.

John Hetherington, a member of the commission, lives in Union Township and claimed he has received a number of complaints from people who have their homes in the area of the windmills. Anthony Prudenti, another board member, said the commission in the future will have to decide how to protect the scenery for homeowners from the windmills.

The board gave the applicant a conditional approval to install the additional windmills and it has three months to update its plan before getting final approval. The board is requesting a secured lease on the land must be provided, a table showing each lease and with acreage and owner of the land, a letter of adequacy from the Conservation District, a copy of the approved sewage planning module and an identifiction of the lands boundary lines. The estimated cost of constuction is $65 million. The windmills produce electricy sold to consumers.
