ELKLAND TOWNSHIP – The push for renewable energy has many Tuscola County townships developing or updating zoning ordinances for possible development.

One those townships is Elkland.

The Elkland Planning Commission Zoning Board of Appeals will host a public hearing at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 at the township hall, located at 6691 Church St. in Cass City.

The reason for the hearing is for the planning commission to consider updates to the 2012 ordinance regarding wind turbines, special land use permits and civil fee schedules.

Township officials are encouraging residents to attend the hearing to ask questions and make comments about the proposed changes.

A copy of the proposed changes is available for viewing at the Rawson Memorial Library, 6495 Pine St., according the Elkland Township Planning Commission Chair Richard VanVliet.

Also, for those who are unable to attend the meeting, written comments can be sent to: Attention Clerk, 6691 Church St., Cass City, MI, 48726 before the meeting.

According to a 2008 study by the Michigan Wind Energy Resource Zone Board, the Thumb area is a prime location for wind development. The state is ranked 14th in the U.S. for wind energy potential, and Huron leads the state in wind turbines.

The state board identified townships in Tuscola County that have potential for wind energy development, and Elkland was among the townships that were listed.
