Concern over wind farms, access to commissioners

Credit:  Pharos-Tribune | www.pharostribune.com ~~

As a Cass County resident I have many concerns about why our elected County Commissioners are avoiding my phone calls to hear my stance on the request to hold a Cass County Commissioners meeting in the evening hours – which was requested at the Dec. 4 meeting. There are many concerned Cass County residents who can only come after work.

Ralph Anderson, Jim Sailors and Jeff LaDonne have been voted into office to work for us and in our best interest. Their actions are showing us that they clearly have their own agenda regarding a WECS (Wind Energy Conversion System) project that has been submitted by the company RES from Great Britain.

The July 3, 2017 commissioners’ minutes stated “the Commissioners were presented 2 contracts for approval of financial services and legal counsel for “Project Breeze.” This is the multi-county wind turbine farm between Fulton, Cass and Miami Counties. There has been little coverage about this project in the Pharos-Tribune which is why so many residents have started to ask questions.

On Nov. 6, 2017, the commissioners’ minutes stated that “Project Breeze” is “nearing the final phase” of agreement and an announcement is projected for the end of the year. Keep in mind that Dec. 31 is the deadline for tax benefits of 80% for beginning phases of building projects. In 2018, the tax benefits are lowered to 60% and in 2019 will be at 40%, so you can see why the push is on to get “Project Breeze” agreement finalized.

I feel – as do hundreds of other Cass County residents who have signed the petition for safer setbacks where these 660-foot to 820-foot turbines will be placed – very worried that we are not a concern to our commissioners. The current Cass County ordinance only requires turbines to be 1000 feet from the nearest corner of a dwelling. 1000 feet is just over three football fields, and the tallest building in Indianapolis is the Salesforce Tower at 701 feet. Soak that in!

Larger setbacks could change the RES (Renewable Energy Systems) turbine project because they will not be able to place as many turbines as planned. This is just a small issue that needs to be discussed and Cass County residents deserve to be heard and hear just exactly where our county is with “Project Breeze.”

Please make your voices heard by emailing, calling their office or and home phone or stopping in at the commissioners’ office in room 200 at the County Building to let them know that you want an evening meeting before Dec. 31, 2017. Also, go on the Cass County Commissioners website and read the agenda and minutes to become informed on this project as well as anything else that may be of interest to you.
