Parishville Town Council opposes wind development near Fort Drum

PARISHVILLE – The Parishville Town Council spoke out against wind development near Fort Drum, unanimously approving a resolution opposing such projects.
The resolution comes as debate rages about the impact of turbines on military aviation and weather radar, and as researchers consider potential development conflicts with the post. Developer Avangrid has signed lease agreements with several property owners in Parishville and Hopkinton for the planned North Ridge Wind Farm.
“The Town Board of the Town of Parishville opposes the industrial wind projects being evaluated by New York State’s Article 10 Siting Board and the Public Service Commission in the immediate proximity to Fort Drum to ensure the national security and continued readiness for future training missions,” the council said in its resolution approved Tuesday.
The council also said that they did not want Fort Drum’s capabilities to be diminished.
The resolution is the most direct anti-wind statement made by a municipality in St. Lawrence County as the issue swirls in neighboring Jefferson and Lewis counties.
Jefferson County legislators and municipalities have voiced opposition to such development, citing the Fort Drum concerns. Meanwhile, the turbines have seen more support in Lewis County, where the turbines have had an economic benefit.
In October, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said his office will review the impact of turbines on the post.
“I see the potential danger, and it’s something I take very seriously,” he said.
